These notes show how Electrochemical Cells are constructed, names the different parts and shows how the half reactions and overall redox reaction can be determined for all electrochemical cells. They show how the standard reduction potential, initial and equilibrium cell voltages can be calculated using the redox table. You are shown how to determine the standard reduction potential (E (0)) of any redox reaction and using it to state whether the reaction is spontaneous or not. Practice examples of electrochemical cells are shown. These include carbon batteries, alkaline batteries, storage batteries (car batteries) and fuel cells.
